The Vizag Cricket Stadium is a picturesque ground located on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

Established in 2003, the Vizag Cricket Stadium is also known as  Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy Cricket Stadium as it is named after Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy, who served as the 14th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from 2004 to 2009.

Formerly known as Andhra Cricket Association-Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association Stadium (ACA-VDCA Stadium), the ground is currently owned by Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh.

With a seating capacity of 27,000, the stadium has two tiers which were designed to evade any restricted view seats, removing pillars or columns that come in the field of view of spectators in some of the other stadiums in the country.

The Vizag Cricket Stadium staged its first international match, a 50-over ODI game played between arch-rivals India and Pakistan in April 2005.

It hosted its first T20 international in February 2016 and later its maiden Test a few months later in November.

Since then, the Visakhapatnam stadium has hosted 10 ODIs, two Tests, and four T20 international matches.

Let’s have a closer look at the Vizag Cricket Stadium Test records and stats.

Vizag Cricket Stadium Test records and stats

Between 2016 and 2019, the right-arm off-spinner bagged 16 wickets in two matches at an average of 19.25. He has registered two five-wicket hauls at this venue in Tests. Ashwin’s teammate Ravindra Jadeja features second on the list with nine wickets in two Tests.

India’s Mayank Agarwal registered the highest individual score at the Vizag Cricket Stadium in Tests. Opening the innings, Mayanka Agarwal scored 215 off 371 balls in the first innings of the opening Test during South Africa’s tour of India in 2019. His scintillating double hundred was laced with 23 fours and six maximums to help India post a record total at the venue.

India’s Ravichandran Ashwin recorded the best bowling figures in an innings of a Test at this venue in 2019. The right-arm off-spinner registered brilliant figures of 7/145 to help bowl out South Africa for 431 in their first innings. Ashwin dismissed Aiden Markram, Theunis de Bruyn, captain Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, Vernon Philander, Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada as India took a 72-run lead. The hosts won the Visakhapatnam Test by 203 runs.

Best bowling figures in a match

Ravichandran Ashwin also holds the record for the best bowling figures in a Test match at the Vizag Cricket Stadium. The veteran spinner took eight wickets during the second Test of England’s tour of India in 2016. While Ashwin claimed five wickets for 67 runs in the first innings, he bagged three wickets for 52 runs in the second innings. Ashwin’s magnificent performance helped India win the Test by 246 runs. The hosts later clinched the five-match Test series 4-0.

India’s Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal recorded the highest partnership at this ground in Test cricket. Rohit Sharma  and Mayank Agarwal forged a massive 317-run stand for the opening wicket in the first innings of the opening Test against South Africa in 2019. Agarwal slammed 215 while Rohit scored 176. India secured a comprehensive 203-run victory courtesy of their incredible partnership.

Hyderabad defeated defending champions Chennai and followed it up with victories over Gujarat and Kolkata. After suffering a 1-2 series defeat against South Africa in the rainbow nation, out-of-form senior India cricketers Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been dropped for the upcoming two-Test home series against Sri Lanka starting in March.

While both Pujara and Rahane were part of the Indian cricket team’s several impressive Test series victories in the last decade, the duo have struggled with their form in the last two years.

Since the start of 2020, Rajkot-born Pujara could manage just 973 runs in 38 innings at an average of 26.29. Though the Saurashtra cricketer registered eight half-centuries during this time, his last century came during the 2018-19 tour of Australia.

Similarly, Rahane has also been short of runs for the last two years, amassing 819 runs in 35 innings at an average of 24.08 with three fifties and one century during this period.

The below-par performances from both Pujara and Rahane forced the selectors to take a harsh decision, leading to their removal from the Test squad.

Here we look at a few players who can permanently replace Pujara and Rahane in the Indian Test playing XI:

Hanuma Vihari

While Hanuma Vihari hasn’t been the most consistent since making his Test debut against England in 2018, the 28-year-old has impressed in his short international career and is expected to be given a longer run in the middle-order in the upcoming Test matches. So far, Vihari has scored 684 runs in 13 Tests at an average of 34.20 with four fifties and one century to his name. The right-hander also had a successful South Africa tour for India A, registering scores of 54, 72*, 63, and 13* besides making a fighting unbeaten 40 in the second innings of India’s second Test against South Africa last month. Considering Vihari’s solid technique, he could become a vital cog in the middle-order for years to come.

Shreyas Iyer

Mumbai cricketer Shreyas Iyer hogged the limelight after he slammed a hundred on his Test debut against New Zealand in Kanpur. Iyer became just the 16th Indian cricketer to register a ton in their debut Test match. The 27-year-old continued to impress in the series as he amassed 202 runs in two Tests at an impressive average of 50.50. He could be a perfect replacement for Ajinkya Rahane in the middle-order but it remains to be seen if Iyer can cash in on this opportunity and finally live up to his billing as one of Indian cricket’s brightest talents.

Shubman Gill

With captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul expected to open the innings for India in the longest format, the team management could utilize highly-rated Shubman Gill in the middle-order. The Punjab-born cricketer has already played some scintillating innings at the top of the order, scoring 558 runs in 10 Tests at an average of 32.82.

However, experts believe that with the kind of technique that Gill possesses, he might flourish batting in the middle-order in Test cricket. While he has mostly batted as an opener in his brief Test career so far, a move down to the middle order could be just what Gill needs to start flourishing and fulfill his promise as a batter in the Indian red-ball team.

Mayank Agarwal

Mayank Agarwal has performed exceedingly well when given an opportunity in the Indian Test set-up. The swashbuckling opener has accumulated 1429 runs in 19 Test matches at an average of 43.30. He has hit four tons as well as six half-centuries in his Test career so far and has performed in pressure situations and difficult conditions abroad. However, with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul set to be the first choice openers in the Indian Test playing XI, Agarwal getting a spot at the top of the order seems highly unlikely although Rahane and Pujara’s exclusion may have just paved a way for him into the team at number five.

Indian cricketer Mayank Agarwal has been ruled out of the first Test of their five-match series against England at Nottingham on August 4, after being hit by a bouncer from teammate Mohammed Siraj in the nets on Monday.

Updating on the condition and status of the opening batsman, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement.

"The BCCI Medical Team assessed him, and a concussion test was conducted. He has shown signs of concussion and is ruled out of the opening Test against England. The 30-year-old is stable and will remain under close medical observation."

As per reports, Agarwal misjudged a short ball from pacer Siraj, which resulted in a blow to the back of his head. The Indian physio Nitin Patel immediately rushed to the aid of Agarwal and helped him back to the dressing room.

After an injury to Shubman Gill a few weeks ago, Agarwal was expected to partner Rohit Sharma at the top of the order for the first Test in Trent Bridge. Agarwal has represented India in 14 Tests after making his debut in cricket’s longest format in 2018 against Australia in Melbourne.

Going forward, it remains to be seen if Agarwal recovers in time for the second Test at Lord’s.

Meanwhile, India will now bank on the services of KL Rahul or Abhimanyu Easwaran to open the innings on Wednesday.

Team India has been plagued with injuries during their ongoing tour of the United Kingdom (UK) over the past few months. Pacer Avesh Khan and all-rounder Washington Sundar have also been ruled out of the tour.

Opener Shubman Gill is doubtful for at least the initial part of the Indian cricket team’s five-Test series against England with a leg injury. This means India will have to pick another opening partner for Rohit Sharma.

India have reserve openers in their Test squad in Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul, as also Abhimanyu Easwaran, who was picked as a standby opener but is now expected to be added to the main squad. Hanuma Vihari and Cheteshwar Pujara have also done opening duty for India in the past. We take a look at each of these options:

Mayank Agarwal

Agarwal was India’s first-choice Test opener for a couple of years after his debut against Australia in Melbourne in December 2018. However, successive scores of 17, 9, 0 and 5 on India’s next trip to Australia in 2020-21 led to Gill taking over the spot. Agarwal hasn’t played a Test since Brisbane in January, where he batted in the lower-middle order. On paper, he is the front-runner to take back his spot from the injured Gill.

KL Rahul

Rahul has the most opening experience among the reserves, and played all five Tests against England on the previous tour in 2018. Scores of 4, 13, 8, 10, 23, 36, 19, 0 and 37 were unimpressive, although he redeemed himself a bit with 149 in the fifth Test, by when the series had been lost. An average of 34.58 after as many as 36 Tests meant he lost his place, and has not played a Test match in two years.

Abhimanyu Easwaran

The Bengal opener is yet to make his debut for India, but he has played 14 first-class games for India ‘A He has also opened in red-ball cricket in England before, making 23 and 31 for India ‘Aagainst West Indies ‘Ain an unofficial Test in Taunton in 2018. Given Agarwal and Rahul’s presence in the squad, it is unlikely that Easwaran will get a look-in for the England Tests unless there is a freak injury or two.

Hanuma Vihari

After just four Test innings at the No. 6 position, Vihari was asked to open at Melbourne in 2018. He fought hard, surviving 111 deliveries in the match, creditable for a makeshift opener. India’s preference for five bowlers has limited the opportunities for him. His part-time off-spin can be handy at times. But India is unlikely to go for his part-time opening skills in England of all places. He presents a left-field option nonetheless.

Cheteshwar Pujara

Pujara averages an incredible 116 as Test opener, although only across six innings, and all of them in the Indian subcontinent. His steady approach has helped India win two Test series in Australia but there are questions over his effectiveness at No. 3 in England. An advantage of having Pujara open is that it will allow a busier batter such as Rahul or Agarwal to drive the innings forward at No. 3.

For about an hour at Lord’s in 2018, it looked as if the Indian cricket team would finally be able to form a partnership without Virat Kohli’s presence in the middle. It was their fourth innings of the five-Test series against England, and Cheteshwar Pujara was fighting the good old fight, alongside Ajinkya Rahane.

As always, he was doing it his way: watching the ball ever so closely, pulling his bat away from deliveries in the channel, making no attempt to go for wider ones, and squeezing out the odd run when the rare ball arrived on the pads.

Pujara stood firm for 17 off 87 balls, easily the most faced by an Indian batsman in the entire match. Then Stuart Broad came up with the big, surprise inswinger, and even Pujara could not keep it from rattling the stumps.

The Pujara method

The third-wicket stand had resisted for almost 13 overs, but had added only 22 runs. Not for the first time, Pujara’s method had come unstuck in difficult batting conditions and India had gone nowhere despite playing out some time.

It is an approach that has brought him 6,267 runs in 86 Tests at an average of 46.08. That is overwhelming proof that it works, and has been working for years now.

He averages 56.31 in India and 47.28 in Australia, places where playing out time the Pujara method tires out the bowlers and blunts the new ball, making it progressively easier for him and the more aggressive batsmen following him. India’s twin Test-series wins in Australia owe their weight in gold to Pujara.

Little return in England

But bowlers do not tire as much in England’s cooler weather. And the Dukes ball used there keeps moving around even in the 60th over. You may have faced 150 deliveries with a defensive mindset but the 151st could still be unplayable.

An approach that stresses primarily on spending time at the crease is thus high risk for little return in typical English conditions. Pujara faced 134 balls for only 23 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. New Zealand’s four specialist fast bowlers kept charging in, and India’s scoreboard remained stuck.

Pujara’s balls per dismissal in England 72.1 falls considerably compared to his overall career number -- 103.22. Tellingly, among the 66 visiting batsmen to have faced at least 1370 Test deliveries in England the same number as Pujara has his 523 runs (average 27.52) are the fewest.

More ‘intent/strong>

There has been a lot of pressure over the years from the Indian team management on Pujara to show more ‘intent. It has also resulted in ridiculous outcomes such as him taking needless risk and being run out twice in the same Test, at Centurion against South Africa in 2018.

Into his 34th year, there is next to no chance of Pujara altering his approach. And for good reason too; it has brought him 6000-plus Test runs. But it largely hasn’t worked in England; his only century there came in almost Indian conditions in 2018 in Southampton, where even Moeen Ali’s part-time off-spin claimed nine wickets. His two fifties in England came in a high-scoring draw in Nottingham 2014 and after India were sitting pretty on an overall lead of 228 in Nottingham 2018.

‘Take more risks/strong>

After the WTC final defeat, Kohli said that he wanted his batsmen to take more risks. “The mindset has to be to score runs and find ways to score runs,Kohli said. “You can't be too worried about getting out because you are bringing the bowler into the game completely and not moving the game forward/span>

"The idea from here on will be to try to score runs and not worry about getting out in testing conditionsotherwise you're just literally standing there hoping that you don't get out and eventually you will because you're not being optimistic enough./span>

Bring Rahul or Agarwal in?

If Kohli wants someone to drive the innings forward at No. 3 in England, Pujara is not going to be that man.

Without any disrespect meant to Pujara’s overall record, India should consider playing one of their brisker reserve openers Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul in his place, at least for the first two or three Tests against England in August.

They had played Rahul at No. 3 instead of Pujara for the series opener in Birmingham in 2018 but brought the Saurashtra batsman back for the remaining four Tests.

An alternative could be that Agarwal opens along with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill drops to No. 3, a position some think he could be more suited to.

Pujara is already going to be remembered as one of the finest of Indian cricket, and being dropped for the specific conditions of England in a few Tests is not going to change that.

KL Rahul’s Team Punjab played yet another high-scoring match in the 2021 Indian T20 League, but this time ended up on the losing side as Delhi successfully chased 196 inside 19 overs on Sunday, April 18 at the Wankhede Stadium.

Punjab were put in to bat first and made a blistering start through KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal who forged a 122-run partnership in 12 overs. Their middle-order batsmen did enough to take the mantle from there as Punjab posted 195/4 in 20 overs.

Like their opponent, Delhi too made full use of the field restriction in the powerplay overs as they went on to score 62/1 during the phase. Shikhar Dhawan anchored Delhi’s chase and for the second time in three outings, he failed to convert his knock in a century, this time falling a mere eight runs short. But with the foundation laid, Marcus Stoinis and Lalit Yadav did the rest to take home the win for Delhi. This was the second-highest successful chase at Mumbai in the Indian T20 League in terms of the target to win.

A high scoring game as this is bound to produce some interesting statistics, and here we look at a few of them.

Rahul and Agarwal setting the stage

The duo of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal has been in blazing form in the Indian T20 League since last season. Their 122-run partnership yesterday was their fourth century-run stand in the league. This was also their fifth-best opening wicket stand for Punjab in the league.

Both players went on to score fifty. For Agarwal, it was his eighth half-century in the Indian T20 League, while Rahul went on to score his 23rd. For Punjab alone, Rahul has scored 21 fifty-plus scores which is the joint-most fifty-plus score for the team in the Indian T20 League.

Rahul seemed like he was on the back seat during the first six overs as he could only muster 23 runs in 24 deliveries. Between 7-15 overs though, he upped the ante and went on to score 38 runs in 26 balls.

Dhawan surpasses Virat Kohli

During the chase, Dhawan went on to score 92, which is now his joint fifth-best individual score in the Indian T20 League. Yesterday’s knock was his 43rd fifty and 45th fifty-plus score in the league. With that, he surpassed Bangalore captain Virat Kohli in the list of most fifty-plus scores in the league. Hyderabad’s David Warner still tops the list with as many as 53 fifty-plus scores.

Most fifty-plus scores in Indian T20 League
Player Matches Runs 100 50 50+
David Warner 145 5347 4 49 53
Shikhar Dhawan 179 5383 2 43 45
Virat Kohli 195 5949 5 39 44
AB de Villiers 172 4974 3 39 42
Suresh Raina 195 5430 1 39 40
Rohit Sharma 203 5324 1 39 40

Out of his 43 fifties in the Indian T20 League, 15 have come as a Delhi batsman and both of his centuries in the league have also come in a Delhi shirt. With that, he also surpassed Shreyas Iyer in the most fifty-plus scores for Delhi.

Dhawan scored a whopping 69.57% of his total runs through boundaries (64/92) and this is the second-most by a batsman in this season.

Mohammed Shami’s evident struggle

Punjab pacer Mohammed Shami was taken to the cleaners by almost every Delhi batsman. The veteran bowler conceded 53 runs in his four overs. He also bowled two no-balls and 10 runs were scored from the eventual free hits. Shami ended his night without a wicket and with an economy of 13.25, which was the second-worst figure among Punjab bowlers.

Most runs conceded by Shami in Indian T20 League
Runs Wickets Opponent Venue Date
53 0 Delhi Wankhede Stadium 18 April 2021
53 1 Bangalore M. Chinnaswamy Stadium 24 April 2019
53 3 Rajasthan Sharjah Cricket Ground 27 September 2020
53 1 Kolkata Eden Gardens 16 April 2018
50 0 Pune Arun Jaithley Stadium 4 May 2016
46 2 Rajasthan IS Bindra Stadium 16 April 2019

On an individual front, this was Shami’s joint-most expensive spell in the Indian T20 League. From an overall perspective, this was the joint fifth most expensive spell by a bowler against Delhi in the league.
