The Big Bash League (BBL) is Australia’s premier T20 competition, established in 2011. The tournament takes place annually in the Australian summer, typically beginning in December and ending in January or February. 

Sydney Sixers were the inaugural champions of the Big Bash League. They defeated Perth Scorchers in the final by seven wickets courtesy of a 41-ball 70 from Moises Henriques. The Sixers are the second-most successful team in the tournament, winning it two more times in 2019-20 and 2020-21.

Perth Scorchers went on to become the most successful team in BBL history with five titles. After losing the final of the first two editions, they went on to win back-to-back titles in the third and fourth edition. They added three more titles in 2016-17, 2021-22 and 2022-23. They defeated Brisbane Heat in the 2022-23 final to win their fifth BBL crown. 

The Scorchers and Sixers reached the final on seven occasions each, which includes four against each other. The two teams are also the only ones to win back-to-back titles.

Among the eight teams that have competed in the tournament across the 11 editions, six of them went on to win the title at least once. Besides the Sixers and Scorchers, Brisbane Heat have won the BBL title in 2012-13 and 2023-24. The likes of Adelaide Strikers (2017-18), Melbourne Renegades (2018-19) and Sydney Thunder (2015�6) have emerged triumphant once each. 

Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes are the only teams yet to lay hands on the trophy. Stars reached three finals and Hurricanes reached two of them, but failed to get over the line in the summit clash.

The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2023 started on October 19 and will run till December 2 in Australia. 

The WBBL is Australian women's domestic Twenty20 cricket competition which is organised by ​​Cricket Australia. 

As many as eight teams will play a total of 59 matches in WBBL 2023.

Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder are the eight teams that are battling for the coveted title.

As per the schedule, each team will play the other sides twice in a double round-robin format in home-and-away format.

The teams finishing in the top four will be advancing to the knockout stage. The top-placed team will directly qualify for the final, while the third and fourth-placed sides will clash in the Eliminator. The winner of the Eliminator will face the third-placed team in the Challenger for a place in the summit clash.

The WBBL 2023 final is scheduled to be played on December 2.

Adelaide Strikers are the defending champions of the WBBL after defeating Sydney Sixers by 10 runs in the 2022 final.

Meanwhile, Sydney Sixers, Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder are the most successful teams in the tournament’s history with two titles each.

To improve the level of competition, every Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) side can include up to three overseas marquee players.

The likes of Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Richa Ghosh and Poonam Yadav are some of the Indian players who have participated in the previous editions of the WBBL. Here we have a look at which Indian players are participating in WBBL 2023.

Indian players in WBBL 2023

Swashbuckling batter Harmanpreet Kaur is the only Indian player in WBBL 2023. 

Interestingly, the 34-year-old was the only Indian to get picked among 18 players in the WBBL 2023 draft.

The Indian women’s team white-ball captain was retained by Melbourne Renegades for the ongoing edition of the WBBL. She is currently playing her second season for the franchise.

Having made her WBBL debut in 2016, Harmanpreet Kaur has amassed 1,204 runs in 51 matches at an average of 41.51 and a strike rate of 121.98. The right-handed batter has slammed six fifties in the WBBL and a top score of 81 not out, which she scored last season.

Apart from her battling credentials, Kaur has already picked up 30 WBBL wickets at an economy of 7.49.

Despite heading into the contest on the back of a confidence boosting win, the fact remains that Melbourne Renegades have largely struggled this season. The team has registered just two wins in eight matches as they find themselves seventh in the points table.

Sydney Thunder, on the other hand, are battling to finish within the playoff spots. After five wins in eight games, they are third in the standings and a win on Saturday will most likely give them safe passage into the playoffs. With so much to play for and a chance to strengthen their playoff hopes, Sydney Thunder will enter Saturday’s clash as the outright favourites.

After a rather poor start, THU’s Jason Sangha has delivered for his team in some style. The 22-year-old batter has scored 239 runs and is batting at a strike rate of 142.26. As a result, Sangha has proved to be quite a catch for fantasy players, accumulating 432 points while making it to the Dream Team in each of his last five matches.

Top tip: Best bowler

REN’s Kane Richardson had a dip in form midway through the season, but the experienced pacer was back to his usual best against Melbourne Stars, picking three wickets and ending with a tally of 97 points. Given the nature of the pitch for the upcoming clash, Richardson, who bagged two wickets in his last outing, is likely to thrive on Saturday as he looks to add to his 14 scalps this season.

Top tip: Best all-rounder and wicket-keeper

THU’s Daniel Sams has been quite consistent this season. With 12 wickets in eight games, he is currently his team’s highest wicket-taker and a popular choice for the all-rounder position among fantasy enthusiasts. With 471 fantasy points to his name, he has the best return among all players involved in this fixture.

THU’s Sam Billings is the outright choice for a wicket-keeper in your fantasy team. The England international has accrued 440 fantasy points in eight games while making it to the Dream Team on six occasions. He’s among the top scorers this season with 265 runs under his belt.

Top tip: Best all-rounder and wicket-keeper

As far as all-rounders are concerned, one can pick Mohammad Nabi. The Afghanistan star has a record of 256 runs and 34 wickets across four BBL seasons and makes for a valuable addition in fantasy cricket teams at 9.5 credits.

For the wicket-keeper spot, Adelaide Strikers�Alex Carey pips Melbourne Renegades�Sam Harper because of experience and his match-winning capabilities as a batter. The Australian international had an impressive BBL 2020 campaign, tallying 425 runs and scoring the first century in the tournament. He is likely to produce some similar displays in the upcoming season as well.

The opening week of the Big Bash League 2020-21 season was packed with intense drama and quality action that kept fans contemplating for some more.

Defending champions Sydney Sixers kickstarted their title defence on a sour note while last year’s runners-up Melbourne Stars won their opening set of fixtures quite comprehensively.

With a host of high-octane fixtures in the pipeline, we signal out the five players who are tipped to shine in the second week of Australia’s T20 extravaganza.

Player: Marnus Labuschagne, Brisbane Heat

Match: Sydney Thunder vs Brisbane Heat

Though Marnus Labuschagne is yet to explore his immense potential, his glimpses of brilliance in the last term and the intra-squad warm-up match during Australia’s limited-overs tour of England propelled Brisbane Heat re-sign the 26-year-old for the Big Bash League 2020-21 season.

A confident hitter of the ball, Labuschagne is now in his fifth season with the Heat. While he has only played 10 matches in BBL so far, with 97 runs to his name, the Test superstar has earned the backing of head coach Darren Lehmann to attain success in the T20 format.

Labuschagne begins his 2020-21 campaign against Sydney Thunder on Monday, and is primed to register a commanding score in the middle order.

Player: Colin Ingram, Hobart Hurricanes 

Match: Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes

Hobart Hurricanes made a prolific start to the Big Bash League 2020-21 season, thanks to Colin Ingram’s 42-ball 55 who is eager to continue the form against his former employers Adelaide Strikers. 

The South African middle-order batsman, who was drafted in as a replacement for England’s Dawid Malan, last featured in the competition back in 2018 where he hit 333 runs in 13 matches for Adelaide Strikers.

Ingram has racked up 665 runs in 26 matches in his entire Big Bash League career, at a strike rate of 138.25 and will look to add on to the count on Monday. 

Player: Marcus Stoinis, Melbourne Stars

Match: Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Stars

Marcus Stoinis�impact as a T20 superstar is widely known, with his 2020 Indian T20 League campaign with Delhi a clear indicator of his match-winning capability. The all-rounder, who finished as the Man of the Series in the 2019-20 season as well the leading run-getter with 705 runs, has a record of 1763 runs and 34 wickets from 62 matches and is favoured to be among the leading performers for week two.

After being dismissed for a duck in the opening fixture, Stoinis bounced back with a match-winning knock of 61 against Sydney Thunder and will look to extend his momentum against a struggling Perth Scorchers side, who were humbled by Melbourne Renegades in the previous fixture.

Player: Aaron Finch, Melbourne Renegades

Match: Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Renegades

Fresh from a confident campaign with the national team in limited-overs cricket, Aaron Finch has made a positive return to the Big Bash League with a 28-ball 35 against Perth Scorchers.

The Australian skipper, who had scored 363 runs last term, is the second-highest run-getter in the history of the Big Bash League with 2275 runs. Given his strike rate of 136.22, onlookers can safely say that the 34-year-old Victorian will prolong his optimistic start when he returns to the pitch on Sunday, against Sydney Sixers.

Player: Nathan Coulter-Nile, Melbourne Stars

Match: Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Stars

The Big Bash League has been a perfect competition to explore the tenacity of Australia’s homegrown pacers, and, amongst the many matchwinners to represent Melbourne Stars in the T20 extravaganza, Nathan Coulter-Nile has made a name for himself. The all-rounder, in his second season with Melbourne Stars, made a blistering start to the latest campaign as he bagged a four-wicket haul against Brisbane Heat.

The 33-year-old has 60 wickets in his Big Bash League career and is all set to cross swords with his previous team Perth Scorchers. He is tipped to maintain the Stars�quality start to the 2020-21 edition.

The Big Bash League 2020-21 is the latest in the line of franchise cricket leagues that are resuming action since the global virus happened. And with the ICC T20 World Cup happening next year, the Australian extravaganza will be yet another chance for players to stake their claims.

Though the new set of rules in BBL 10 have thrown few fans off gear even before the start of the tournament, it will hardly bother  the T20 stars who are raring to go with high-octane at disposal.

We outline five players who are tipped to shine in this opening week and could help the fantasy owners get ahead early on.

Player: Rashid Khan, Adelaide Strikers

Match: Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes

The shrewd Afghanistan spinner has been one of the biggest success stories of the Big Bash League with the Adelaide Strikers. And the all-rounder returns to the team after a successful Indian T20 League campaign in October-November. While Rashid Khan has scalped 56 wickets in 40 matches, he has also made valuable contributions with the bat, scoring 253 runs at a strike-rate of 161.14.

Fresh from a positive campaign with Hyderabad in the Indian T20 League, where he bagged 20 wickets at an economy rate of 5.37, Rashid Khan is tipped to make a bright start to the BBL 2020-21 season when he faces Hobart Hurricanes on Sunday.

Player: James Pattinson, Melbourne Renegades

Match: Melbourne Renegades vs Perth Scorchers

James Pattinson is amongst the most experienced homegrown players in the Big Bash League, and he returns to Melbourne Renegades after a two-season stint with Brisbane Heat. The 30-year-old has scalped 32 wickets in his Big Bash League career and will be eager for a splendid change in fortunes in franchise cricket, having played out a disappointing campaign for Mumbai in the recently-concluded Indian T20 League.

Amongst the current crop of Australian players representing the Renegades in the latest edition, Pattinson is the only bowler who has been the leading wicket-taker for the franchise team on two occasions. Coach Michael Klinger will also have high hopes from the veteran pacer.

Player: Glenn Maxwell, Melbourne Stars

Match: Melbourne Stars vs Brisbane Heat; Melbourne Stars vs Sydney Thunder

The Melbourne Stars captain is undoubtedly one of the biggest stars of the Big Bash League, who will arrive at the back of an exciting T20I and ODI series against India. Fans would expect Glenn Maxwell to continue his rich vein of form in 20-overs cricket as his career graph in the competition is certainly amongst the best. Maxwell is the second-highest run-getter in the history of the team (1304 runs).

Speaking of current form, Maxwell put his poor form from the Indian T20 League behind as he scored 78 runs in the recent T20I series against India to ease the pressure that he had brought upon himself.

Player: Cameron Green, Perth Scorchers

Match: Melbourne Renegades vs Perth Scorchers

A 21-year-old Cameron Green enters the 2020-21 edition of the Big Bash League as one of the most highly-rated stars, and Perth Scorchers would hope that the all-rounder turns out to be a revelation by the end of the BBL season. Having made his debut for the franchise in the 2018-19 season, Green has gone on to score 106 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 108.16.

Green is tipped to start Perth Scorchers�opening game against Melbourne Renegades, and the youngster is poised to make a solid statement while facing the likes of James Pattinson and Kane Richardson.

Player: Moises Henriques, Sydney Sixers

The Sydney Sixers captain is recognized as one of the most prolific performers in the Big Bash League, and enters the latest campaign with a clear aim to help his team defend their title. Moises Henriques made his international comeback to T20I cricket after a three-year absence with a three-wicket haul in the first game of the T20I series against India.

The 33-year-old hit 267 runs in the championship-winning season last year and seeks a positive start to the season against Hobart Hurricanes.

The tenth Big Bash League season is set to get underway on Thursday, December 10, with defending champions Sydney Sixers scheduled to lock horns with Hobart Hurricanes at the Blundstone Arena.

BBL 2020-21 will see a host of changes in terms of rules and regulations and will see as many as 61 games - including five knockout-round matches - to be played over the course of two months. The final will take place on February 6, 2021.

While the first half of the competition will be played in Hobart and Canberra, the tournament will eventually move to Launceston, Brisbane, Adelaide, Carrara Oval, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney.

As we approach the Big Bash League 2020 start date, here is all you need to know about the competition in the opening week.

Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Sixers will be the first game of the Big Bash League 2020 schedule. Melbourne Stars will then play two back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday against Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder respectively, before Renegades and Perth Scorchers lock horns in the final game on Saturday.

In Sunday’s doubleheader, Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Sixers will return to action, this time against Adelaide Strikers and Renegades respectively.

Where to watch Big Bash League 2020 live in India?

Sony Sports Network is set to provide Big Bash League 2020 live telecast in India. While Sony SIX and Sony SIX HD are expected to broadcast the 10th edition of the tournament, the channel might differ in case there are more cricket matches on a given day.

On the other hand, the live streaming of Big Bash League 2020 will be available on Sony Liv.

Aaron Finch's Melbourne Renegades clinched their first Big Bash League title Sunday after city rivals the Stars imploded during a tense run chase. 

Chasing 146 to win at Docklands Stadium, Glenn Maxwell's men were 93 without loss and cruising before losing an incredible seven wickets for 19 runs. 

They finished on 132 for seven, losing the first ever all-Melbourne BBL final by 13 runs at the end of the near two-month tournament.

"It's unbelievable," said Finch. "I thought when we got (Ben) Dunk caught and we had two new batters in we had a chance. It's a wicket that was so hard to chase runs on, that's why I was happy to bat first.

"The boys just executed well under pressure. Very special to win in front of our home fans," he added.

After some tight bowling to restrict the Renegades, the Stars signalled their intentions early with left-hander Dunk smacking a boundary off the first ball of the innings from Kane Richardson.

But he and fellow opener Marcus Stoinis weren't taking any chances, knowing that wickets in hand could be vital in the final overs.

Instead, they picked off runs when they could to keep the scoreboard ticking over coupled with some extravagant shots, including a Dunk six off Cameron Boyce and Stoinis smashing an even bigger one down the ground from the same bowler.

Dunk brought up his 50 off 38 balls with a four before Stoinis finally fell for 39 after 93-run stand, bowled by Boyce to spark the incredible collapse.

Gutted Maxwell 

Test batsman Peter Handscomb came to the crease but only lasted two balls and then Dunk holed out to Dan Christian off Boyce for 57 before Maxwell was out for one.

Nic Maddinson followed for six and then Seb Gotch for two. Dwayne Bravo was the next to go for three.

It turned the game on its head and there was no way back for the Stars.

"We played some great cricket this tournament, to fall short at the end is disappointing," said a gutted Maxwell. 

"Hopefully we win it next year. Congratulations to Renegades, we've had some great tussles. To my boys, I've asked a lot of you and you've delivered in spades."

The Renegades, sent into bat in front of 40,000 fans, made 145 for five off their 20 overs.  

Test opener Marcus Harris clubbed 12 runs off Jackson Bird's first four balls but he then rashly went for another big hit and top-edged to wicketkeeper Handscomb.

The tenacious Bird, recalled to the side in place of all-rounder Evan Gulbis, struck again in his next over to take an easy catch off his own bowling and send Sam Harper packing for six, leaving the Renegades struggling.

Veteran Cameron White joined Aaron Finch and they took 11 off spinner Adam Zampa's first over before the Renegades skipper was out in bizarre fashion for 13 just as he was hitting his stride.

White hit a straight drive and it deflected off bowler Bird's boot to hit the stumps, with Finch stranded outside his crease, leaving the Renegades 47 for three off six overs.

When White went soon after for 12, lbw to Zampa, they were in big trouble, managing just 65 runs by the halfway mark.

The pace was picked up over the final 10 overs with Christian, their semi-final hero, and Tom Cooper sharing an 80-run unbroken partnership to push the total into respectable territory, with the 29 runs bludgeoned from the last two overs proving vital.

Cooper ended on 43 not out and Christian was unbeaten on 38.
