The France national football team has produced some great players over the years who have gone on to achieve great success during their tenure with Les Bleus.

Among this pool of players are some of the most prolific strikers to have graced the game of football, who have scored a plethora of goals for the national team to etch their names in the history books.

Veteran striker Olivier Giroud heads the list of France’s top goal-scorers, having scored 53 goals since making his debut in 2011.

Giroud scored the record-breaking 52nd goal for Les Bleus while playing the FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16 fixture against Poland when he netted the opener in the 3-1 win.

The striker, who plays for AC Milan, broke the decade-long record of 51 goals, which was held by the legendary Thierry Henry

The former Arsenal striker, who was a part of their ‘invincibles?2003/04 squad, played his first match for France in October 1997, in a 2-1 win over South Africa. His only hat-trick came against Paraguay during a friendly match in June 2017.

Owing to his impressive performances, he made it to France’s squad for the World Cup 1998, where he finished as their top-scorer with three goals in the maiden title-winning campaign.

He was yet again the hero for his country two years later, when he ended as their leading goal-scorer with three goals at the European Championship 2000, which France won by defeating Italy in the final.

Attacking midfielder Antoine Griezmann also features on the list of France’s top goal-scorers, having scored 42 goals so far.

Griezmann’s major accolades with the national team include a Golden Boot award at the Euro 2016, where France finished as runners-up.

Two years later, he won the Silver Boot for finishing the 2018 FIFA World Cup as the second-highest goal-scorer with four goals as Didier Deschamps?men won the glittering trophy for the second time in their history.

Moreover, Griezmann made his 71st appearance on the trot for the national team when he played the World Cup 2022 Round of 16 match against Poland, which is France’s record for most consecutive appearances.

Michel Platini and Karim Benzema are the next two on the list of France’s top goal-scorers.

While Platini scored 41 goals in 72 matches, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has netted 37 goals in 97 appearances for Les Bleus so far.

Despite featuring regularly for the France national football team since making his debut in March 2007, he was omitted from the squad between October 2015 and May 2021 owing to his involvement in controversies.

"The signing is subject to contractual terms and a medical, which will be completed after Jadon's involvement in the UEFA European Championship."

It took Manchester United immense bargain to confirm the move as Dortmund initially demanded £85m for the player. Be that as it may, the asking price was lower than their previous price tag of £108m from last summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 21-year-old will sign a contract until 2026, with an option of extending it to another year. Furthermore, his former club, Manchester City will receive around ?3m as part of the deal.

They reportedly held talks with Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino, Paulo Fonseca, Gennaro Gattuso and Julen Lopetegui, but nothing really materialized. The Lilly Whites opened talks with Santo's camp only last week.

"When you have a squad with quality and talent, we want to make the fans proud and enjoy," Nuno told Spurs' club website.

"Paris Saint-Germain is delighted to announce the transfer of Georginio Wijnaldum," said PSG in an official statement. "Arriving from Liverpool, the Netherlands international midfielder has signed with the club from the French capital until 30 June 2024.

The deal, which could rise to 38 million with add-ons, was announced by both clubs on Monday with Buendia set to complete his medicals after Argentina's World Cup qualifying game against Colombia on Tuesday night.

It was on May 27 that Antonio Conte left Inter by mutual consent after a disagreement with the board. It is said that the former Chelsea coach was asked to cut his wage bill to 15-20 per cent and sell players worth up to £70m in the upcoming transfer window. While Conte has left, the problem still persists, with Inzaghi being at the centre of it.

Striker Romelu Lukaku has attracted interest from across Europe while Lautaro Martinez is yet to sign a new contract. Wing-back Achraf Hakimi is gathering from Paris Saint-Germain too.

June 2: 2:40 PM: Barcelona sign Emerson Royal

Only a day after completing the deal for Eric Garcia, Barcelona completed their third signing for the 2021/22 season by exercising their option to buy for Emerson Royal from Real Betis. The 22-year-old right-back has signed a contract until 2024 with the Spanish club. The Brazil international arrived in La Liga in January 2019 in a joint financial operation between Barcelona and Real Betis. Each club paid half of his transfer fee.

Barcelona exercised their option to buy the player for ? million. The 22-year-old right-back made 79 appearances in all competitions for Betis, scoring five goals and providing 10 assists.

The defender joined the Barça Academy in 2008 and continued his development at La Masia until 2017 when he left for Manchester City where he spent four seasons featuring at U-19, U-23 level and for the first team.

Barcelona have explicitly mentioned that his 'buy out clause is set at 100 million euros'.

Aguero leaves City as a club legend and their all-time top scorer. Since making his Premier League debut in the 2011-12 season, the forward made 390 appearances for the Cityzens, scoring 260. During his 10-year stint with the Manchester club, Aguero won five Premier League titles, six League Cups and one FA Cup. He came close to winning the UEFA Champions League this season, but fell short as City lost to Chelsea 1-0 in the final.

Reigning world champions France has produced numerous sensational strikers over the course of its illustrious history. Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappé, who has already been tipped as a future Ballon d’Or winner, is just the latest in a long list of talented players that the two-time world champions have produced.

While Mbappé looks destined to finish his career as one of the greatest to have ever played for Les Bleus, we have a look at the top five goal-scorers in the history of the French national team.

Thierry Henry ?51 goals

A clinical finisher and one of the most elegant dribblers of all time, Thierry Henry was a part of the first French team to win a World Cup in 1998. He was also a part of the side that won the UEFA European Championship two years later and is the all-time leading goal-scorer in the history of Les Blues.

Henry’s football career, in fact, was filled with trophies and success for country as well as club. The talisman of Arsenal’s invincible team that went an entire Premier League campaign unbeaten, Henry won two English top-flight titles and two FA Cups with the Gunners. During his spell with Barcelona, the Frenchman won two La Ligas, the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League.

Michel Platini ?41 goals

Perhaps the most gifted playmaker of his generation, Michel Platini was fondly referred to as the King during his playing days. Unlike Henry, Platini never won the World Cup with France but he was instrumental to their UEFA European Championship triumph in 1984 for which he was adjudged the Player of the Tournament after scoring nine goals, including successive hat-tricks in the group stage.

A born leader, Platini’s ability to score as well as create goals was unlike anyone else at the time and his influence on the pitch also helped Juventus win the Serie A in 1984 and 1986. Regarded as one of the finest passers of a football, Platini was technically gifted and lethal from dead-ball situations. A creative midfielder, his range of passing and vision on the ball were unmatched for a brief spell during which he won three Ballon d'Ors from 1983 to 1985.

Olivier Giroud ?39 goals

Olivier Giroud may not be the first name to pop up during conversations on France’s greatest-ever strikers, but the importance that the French targetman plays in the team is not lost on his teammates and coaches. A selfless striker who is deadly in the air and when inside the penalty box, it may come as a surprise to some that Giroud is third on the list for leading goal-scoring Frenchmen, with 39 strikes to his name.

A member of the team that won the 2018 World Cup, Giroud’s work ethic and knack to improvise with smart finishes inside the box means that he can contribute to teams even if he’s not always on the scoresheet. A Ligue 1 winner with Montpellier and a four-time FA Cup champion, Giroud is likely to add to his goal tally for France and move higher up on this list before retiring.

David Trezeguet ?34 goals

Like Henry, David Trezeguet was a member of the teams that won France the World Cup in 1998 and the UEFA European Championship in 2000. A complete striker with pace, power and a poacher’s instinct, Trezeguet was an opportunistic frontman who was always on hand to make the most of loose touches or lapses by defenders in the penalty area.

He didn’t require many touches of the ball to get his shot away either and was also a big threat in the air. Scorer of the golden goal that helped France beat Italy to win the UEFA European Championship in 2000, he also won two top-flight titles each in France and Italy with AS Monaco and Juventus respectively.

Zinedine Zidane ?31 goals

Deemed as the greatest playmaker of his generation, watching Zinedine Zidane with the ball at his feet was closest one could come to poetry in motion on a football pitch. The driving force behind Les Bleus?World Cup triumph in 1998 and their UEFA European Championship success two years later, Zidane’s close control and vision are still topics of discussions in footballing circles.

A Ballon d’Or recipient, Zidane won league titles in Spain as well as Italy and was a part of Real Madrid’s Galactico era. With Los Blancos, Zizou, as he’s fondly known, won the UEFA Champions League. However, winning the World Cup and ending France’s long wait for the trophy is arguably one of the finest achievements of his career, if not his best.

Hostilities will resume when Chelsea battle Arsenal in the all-London FA Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

The two local rivals battled in the Europa League final last season and it was Chelsea who emerged victorious with a 4-1 thrashing of Unai Emery’s side in what was Eden Hazard’s farewell game for the Blues.

Despite it being just 13 months since that final, both teams will head into the contest with new managers at the helm. Chelsea appointed Frank Lampard after Maurizio Sarri’s departure back home to Italy and Arsenal sacked Emery midway through the current season and poached Mikel Arteta from Manchester City to lead them into the future.

It won’t only be the managers but also a few new faces who weren’t part of that Europa League final that will take centre-stage on Sunday. We take a look at the five players who could impact their team’s trophy aspirations in the FA Cup final.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be the Gunners?go-to man on Sunday in the final.

The Gabonese has struck 68 goals for Arsenal since joining them in January 2018 from Borussia Dortmund and been the silver lining in a rather poor spell for the club. Aubameyang scored twice in the semifinal against Manchester City in Arsenal’s surprise 2-0 win over the defending champions.

He was on target against Chelsea at the Emirates and gave his side the lead, but the much-maligned Arsenal defence conceded two sloppy goals in quick succession and the Gunners lost 2-1.

The Arsenal captain will be eager to score a goal or two and lift the FA Cup on Sunday, his first with the Gunners.

Christian Pulisic

The American wonder kid has been a revelation for Chelsea this season. Pulisic has scored nine goals in his debut campaign with the Blues and has delivered some brilliant performances over the course of the season.

Like Aubameyang, Pulisic arrived from Dortmund and was touted to be Eden Hazard’s replacement at the club. The youngster hasn’t let the pressure of expectation bog his performances and has been immense for Frank Lampard’s men over the course of the season. Pulisic has been in top form since the return of football post-lockdown and scored goals against Manchester City and Liverpool.

The American is in red hot form and will be the Blues?biggest threat in attack in the final.

Olivier Giroud

The Frenchman was on his way out of Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window, with Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur chasing his signature. However, an injury to Tammy Abraham meant that Giroud stayed put and Chelsea coach Frank Lampard will be counting his lucky stars that he did.

Giroud has scored six goals in his last seven matches and was on target in Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final. He also opened the scoring in Baku in last year’s Europa League final and assisted one of Hazard’s two second-half goals.

The 33-year-old was let go after Arsenal acquired Aubameyang from Dortmund and he’ll be gunning to pip his former side in another cup final.

David Luiz

The Brazilian’s season with Arsenal has been nothing short of a calamity.

Luiz conceded five penalties in the Premier League this season - a new record - and has been constantly called out for his atrocious performance since signing for Arsenal in the 2019 summer transfer window. Arteta’s lack of options at the back means that Luiz will start the final against the club that he represented up until last season and another lapse by the 33-year-old could be all that it takes for Chelsea to win the FA Cup.

Willy Caballero

Alongside Manchester United’s Sergio Romero, Chelsea’s Willy Caballero is perhaps the most accomplished backup keeper plying his trade in the Premier League. The 38-year-old became the temporary first choice at Manchester City in 2016/17 and moved to London to join Chelsea in 2017.

The Argentine became a cult hero after his heroics against Liverpool in the 2016 League Cup final, where he saved three penalties in the shootout to help City win the cup. Caballero has seen his playing time go up quite a bit this season, as Kepa Arizzabalaga’s disastrous form forced manager Frank Lampard’s hand to play the experienced keeper. He was in goal this past weekend in Chelsea’s all-important 2-0 win over Wolves that secured their Champions League status for next season and will be the man between the sticks on Sunday.

Caballero has already won the FA Cup with Chelsea back in 2018 and will be keen to add another winner’s medal to his cabinet.

A taxing season of football in England has finally culminated in two of London’s biggest clubs locking horns in the oldest football tournament on the planet, as Arsenal ready themselves for the 139th FA Cup final against Chelsea on Saturday at Wembley.

The Blues?manager Frank Lampard has done a commendable job with the limited resources he has had this season, guiding his squad toward Champions League qualification by finishing fourth in the Premier League while also taking them to the FA Cup final.

His counterpart on the day, Mikel Arteta, brought in as a replacement of Unai Emery in December, has shown glimpses of brilliance at times, but also struggled with consistency. Finishing a lowly eighth in the league means the Gunners will be without European football next season, but winning the FA Cup would give them an opportunity to bring the glorious nights back at the Emirates.

Arsenal’s road to the final

Arsenal had a rather easy run to the final, having defeated the likes of Leeds United, Bournemouth and Portsmouth in the opening rounds. They narrowly got the better of Sheffield United in the quarter-final to set up a clash against Manchester City for a place in the final.

Defying the odds, captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice as Arsenal stunned their opponents to get a shot at winning a record 14th FA Cup title.

Chelsea’s road to the final

The Blues started off their FA Cup campaign with an easy 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the third round, followed by a 2-1 win over Hull City in the subsequent round. They squared off against Liverpool in the fifth round and as Jurgen Klopp decided to field a rather young squad to concentrate more on the league, an easy 2-0 win for Lampard gave them the passage to book a place in the quarter-final.

A goal from Ross Barkley made all the difference against Leicester City as Chelsea progressed in the semi-final where a stern Manchester United awaited. Olivier Giroud, Mason Mount and an own goal from Harry Maguire guided them to a thumping 3-1 win as Chelsea set course for a repeat of the 2017 FA Cup final.

Arsenal Team News

Right-back Hector Bellerin hasn’t featured for Mikel Arteta since their victory over City due to the issues in his calf. The Spaniard, however, is set to return after being named on the bench during his side’s final Premier League game of the season.

While his return provides a boost, the likes of Shkodran, Pablo Mari, Bernd Leno, Gabriel Martinelli and Calum Chambers remain the long-term absentees.

Chelsea Team News

Chelsea will be bolstered by the return of their midfield man-machine N’golo Kante, and in attack, Willian could mark his return after being left out against Wolves with an unspecified injury. The only absentee for Frank Lampard is young midfielder Billy Gilmour.

Arsenal player to watch - David Luiz

Despite being extremely inconsistent throughout the season, defender David Luiz is very much a part of Arteta’s rebuild. In fact, the last time these two sides met, the Brazilian was at the receiving end of a straight red, but a late goal from Hector Bellerin snatched victory right at the death as the game finished 2-2 at Stamford Bridge.

Luiz has had his moment of brilliance and with two senior centre-backs missing, Arteta would want a stern performance from his veteran.

Chelsea player to watch - Olivier Giroud

In the 148 years of history of the FA Cup, only one player has scored for and against the same side in a Cup final. So as Olivier Giroud returns to face his former side, he will aim to become only the second man on the list after Frank Stapleton, who scored against Manchester United in 1979 while playing for Arsenal, and then for United four years later against Brighton.

Giroud’s association with Wembley is outstanding, to say the least, as the Frenchman has won as many as seven medals at the venue, including four FA Cup triumphs and three Community Shield medals. But what he will be most remembered for is his goal against the Gunners in last season’s Europa League final, a game that Chelsea won 4-1.

Having scored seven goals in his last 10 appearances, Giroud is well and truly tipped to have a major impact on the night.

Key facts

If Arsenal manage to stun Chelsea, Arteta, who won the FA Cup as a player with the Gunners in 2014, will become the first person to win the cup with Arsenal as a captain and a manager.

This will be Chelsea’s 14th appearance in the final - half of which have come in the last 13 years. The Blues have won seven of their last nine finals.

Arsenal vs Chelsea FA Cup Final - When and where to watch live

Arsenal and Chelsea will lock horns in an empty Wembley Stadium on Saturday, August 1 at 10:00 PM IST.

The game will be broadcast exclusively on the Sony Network, and you can watch the game on Sony Ten 3 as well as on the SonyLiv app.

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud and goalkeeper Willy Caballero extended their contracts till the end of the 2020/21 season, the Premier League side announced on Wednesday.

Giroud, 33, forced himself back into Frank Lampard's plans just prior to the shutdown caused by the global pandemic and scored the Blues' last goal in a 4-0 win over Everton in March.

The French international's contract was due to expire at the end of this season, but Chelsea have exercised an option to extend that deal for another year.

"I am delighted to continue my journey and adventure at Chelsea," said Giroud. "I can't wait to get back to playing and enjoying competitive football with my team-mates."

The former Arsenal striker came close to leaving the club in January in a bid to further his case for a place in France's Euro 2020 squad after falling behind Tammy Abraham as Lampard's first-choice forward.

However, Giroud started Chelsea's last three Premier League games and also scored in a vital 2-1 win over Tottenham in February.

"Since I have been back at Chelsea, Olivier has been brilliant as a professional and as a man in general," said Lampard.

"He has great qualities to help the squad both on and off the pitch, not only with his talent but with the example he sets every day and the experience he brings to our young squad. I am very pleased that will continue next season."

Caballero's new deal will keep him at Stamford Bridge until months before his 40th birthday.

The Argentine briefly displaced the world's most expensive goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, earlier this year after a series of costly errors by the Spaniard.

"It is a difficult time for everyone right now so I feel blessed by this opportunity and truly appreciate it," Caballero told Chelsea's website.

Kepa had reclaimed his place by the time the Premier League was suspended, but Lampard also hailed the important of Caballero's experience.

"I trust in Willy, he trains brilliantly and is a great professional," Lampard said.

"He stepped into the team earlier this year and showed his quality, and his experience is invaluable in the dressing room. I'm delighted he will be with us next season."

Arsenal have had the image of being reluctant spenders in the Premier League for a long time. But, in the past decade, the Gunners did loosen the purse on occasions, splashing the cash for some remarkable footballers. So, who have been their top purchases during the last ten years?

Arsenal, for a long time under Arsene Wenger, developed the reputation of being reluctant spenders in the transfer market. But, in recent years things have changed somewhat at the Emirates Stadium, with the Gunners willing to pay top dollar for their players.

Arsenal’s top ten most expensive signings have come in the period between 2010 and 2019. But which of the many players to arrive at the Emirates during that period have proven to be the worthiest acquisitions? Let’s find out?/p>

Laurent Koscielny

The Frenchman may have ended things on a bitter note with Arsenal last summer, but there is no denying the importance of the role Koscielny played under Wenger over the past decade.

Signed in the summer of 2010, Koscielny arrived in London from the French club Lorient in a ?2.5 million deal. The Frenchman had his fair share of injury troubles during his stint with Gunners and things didn’t always go his way, especially in his first season in England. But the way he carried himself on the field with unwavering commitment and acted as a leader on the field made him an immediate fan favourite.

Koscielny was appointed the club captain towards the end of his career at Arsenal. The central defender went on to make 353 appearances for the North Londoners, winning three FA Cups. But the manner of his exit last summer has tarnished some of his legacy at the club.

Olivier Giroud

Signed as a replacement for Robin van Persie in the summer of 2012, Olivier Giroud arrived at Arsenal in a ?2 million deal, after having fired Montpellier to the Ligue 1 title in 2011-12. The Dutchman was always going to be a tough act to follow, but Giroud did his bit and much more during his time with the North London outfit to ensure the goals didn’t dry up.

The Frenchman racked up 253 appearances for Arsenal, plundering 105 goals in the process while assisting 41 more. Giroud won three FA Cups and three Community Shields with the Gunners, scoring some spectacular goals along the way.

The arrivals of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang forced Giroud out of Arsenal, with the Frenchman signing for Chelsea in January 2018. Although, he ended up joining a direct rival, the 33-year-old is remembered fondly by the Arsenal fans.

Mesut Ozil

The German playmaker gets a bit of flak from fans and pundits for his lack of effort on the field at times, but one cannot question the impact that Mesut Ozil made upon arriving at Arsenal.

Signed from Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid in the summer of 2013, for a then club-record fee of ?8 million, it did not take long for the German playmaker to sprinkle his magic at the Emirates and endear himself to the club faithful. With silky touches, defence-splitting passes, Ozil oozed class almost every time he was on the field.

Ozil, till date, has made 254 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 44 goals and assisting 77 more. There has been regression in his form in recent seasons while his carefree attitude gets questioned plenty, often being made the scapegoat for Arsenal’s poor form. With just a year left on his contract, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him leave the club in the next transfer window.

Alexis Sanchez

A year after raiding Real Madrid for Ozil, Arsenal swooped in on their arch rivals Barcelona, snapping up Chilean attacker Alexis Sanchez for a reported fee of around ?3 million. And, it turned out to be another inspired signing for the Gunners!

Alexis, in his debut season with Arsenal, fired them to a FA Cup triumph, scoring and assisting in the final against Aston Villa and was named the club’s player of the year. The Chilean repeated this feat again in 2016-17, scoring in the final to lead them to another FA Cup win and grabbing another Player of the Season award, after having scored 30 goals.

Sanchez’s time at Arsenal was littered with important goals throughout, before he ended things on a sour note in January 2018, signing for Manchester United. His career has been on a downward curve ever since. In total, he made 166 appearances for Arsenal, grabbing 80 goals and assisting 45 more.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The Gabonese international hasn’t been at the club for that long and may not have won any silverware yet, but the sheer impact he has made with his goals and the fact that he has saved the team from hairy moments on so many occasions gets his name on the list.

Aubameyang arrived at Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018 for a reported fee of ?3.8 million ?a club record fee at the time and has been scoring goals left, right and center ever since. The 30-year-old has already plundered 61 goals in 97 matches for the Gunners and went on to win the Premier League Golden Boot in his first full season at the club (2018-19).

While the Gunners have continued to underperform this season, Aubameyang, who was thrust with the responsibility of the captaincy last year, has continued his goalscoring ways, having found the net 20 times in all competitions. But with his contract set to expire in a year and no likelihood of European football at the Emirates next season, this could very well turn out to be his final flurry at the club.

Olivier Giroud has revealed that he had made his mind to quit Chelsea in the January transfer window, and it was only because the Blues couldn’t find a replacement that he decided to stay back.

Since the start of the season, Giroud has made only nine appearances and has scored two goals in the Premier League. In the last six months, Giroud had made only two appearances in Chelsea colours.

This had made life difficult for the 33-year-old Frenchman who was looking for a move away from Stamford Bridge in search of regular playing time. He said, "To be honest, I saw myself playing elsewhere. I had six tough months, which is why I wanted a change of scene to get back to playing and enjoying myself on the pitch, so I tried to leave in January.?/span>

His move was only blocked because if they had let him go, Chelsea wouldn’t have had anyone to replace Tammy Abraham. “I did everything I could, but Chelsea didn't want to let me leave because the condition in place was that they had to bring in a replacement. On 31 January, I still hoped that I would leave. I was very disappointed, but I'd say that by the following morning, I'd put that behind me.?said Giroud.

But it proved to be a wise call, as soon after, Tammy Abraham was injured and Giroud was called back into action. “I got straight back into the swing of things and was lucky that we had the winter break. I came back the week after raring to go and had the game against Manchester United when I came on and scored, but was marginally offside.?added the 2018 World Cup winner.

But Giroud’s days in Chelsea are surely numbered as Chelsea will go for a replacement in the summer transfer window. However, there are a number of suitors for the mercurial footballer as the likes of Inter Milan, Lazio and cross-city rivals Tottenham Hotspur line up with bids. Will he decide to stay in England and finish his “London trilogy?or move abroad for a new challenge is the question.

Real Madrid's Karim Benzema has mocked France striker Olivier Giroud by likening himself to a Formula One car and Giroud a go-kart.

Benzema has not played for France since 2015 and watched from afar as Giroud spearheaded the team's World Cup triumph in Russia two years ago.

With over 500 appearances for Real Madrid and in his 11th season with the Spanish giants, no questions remain over Benzema's playing skills.

Asked about the Chelsea forward during a question and answer session on Instagram on Sunday night, Benzema said: "You can't confuse a Formula One car with a go-kart, and I'm being kind. I know I'm a Formula One car...

"It works because he's there, that's it. It's not going to be spectacular. (Antoine) Griezmann and (Kylian) Mbappe get seen more while he rolls his sleeves up and does the dirty work.

"But does everyone like his game? I don't know."

During the 2016 and 2017 seasons ahead of up Russia 2018, Giroud scored 16 goals for France in 24 games.

He also played every match at the World Cup and although he failed to find the target in Russia, his team came home with the trophy.

France coach Didier Deschamps has sidelined Benzema since a legal case in 2015.

The case involving Benzema allegedly trying to facilitate a scheme to blackmail fellow France international Mathieu Valbuena over a compromising private film on a stolen mobile phone.

The investigation is ongoing, and Benzema is now waiting to hear if he will face a criminal trial.

Benzema has scored 19 goals in 32 appearances for Real Madrid this season while Giroud has largely been a back-up player for Chelsea, despite a decent run of form in February.

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the name Olivier Giroud? A tall, strong Number 9 who is ferocious in front of the goal. Since joining Arsenal from Montpellier in 2012, the towering Frenchman has been one of the most regular faces for the London based club in the last decade.

In Arsenal, his predecessors were the likes of Thierry Henry and Robin Van Persie. So his goal-scoring prowess was never going to be enough to amaze the Arsenal fans. After scoring 105 goals in 253 appearances in all competitions, Giroud joined Chelsea on the deadline day of the 2018 winter transfer window His first full season with the club, 2018-19, saw him making 27 Premier League appearances, but Frank Lampard's arrival, games have been far too in between for the 2018 World Cup winner.

Giroud has featured in only seven Premier League games this season under Lampard, who is evidently not a fan of Giroud's abilities. The manager brought in a freshness to the team and his faith was placed on the young guns. Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Reece James and Calum Hudson-Odoi started the season with a lot of flares. Abraham, for all, has scored 13 goals in 25 appearances, but an injury in the second half of the season has forced the English manager to test to his bench strength.

On came the unused Giroud, who was linked with a move away from Chelsea throughout the January transfer window, with Inter and Tottenham lurking closer. Nothing eventually materialised as Lampard somehow convinced the Frenchman that he indeed has a future, at least for the rest of the season.

So with Michy Batshuayi misfiring during the given opportunities, Lampard had nowhere to go. The statistics 33-year-old Frenchman has mustered this season are far from impressive. He has had only 284 minutes of action in the Premier League and a mere 78 minutes in the Champions League. While goals have not been so easy to score, Giroud has certainly added another dimension to the attack.

Unlike Abraham, Giroud offers a more lethal approach in the attack given that he a strong and physical player who can hold up defenders, win aerial duels and disturb the centre backs with clever movements. What further works in his favour is that he is probably the best header of the ball in the Premier League.

Giroud has the experience of playing in a top side for a long time. He has played 32 Champions League matches with 12 goals and six assists against his name. These stats show he had exactly what Lampard required from his lead attacker. The break finally came for the 33-year-old when Abraham was out of the Manchester United match with a foot injury and although the Red Devils won, Chelsea were denied two goals by VAR, one of them was a fantastic header by Giroud.

The Frenchman was by far the most troublesome player on the pitch against the Red Devils. His return to form was rewarded against Tottenham Hotspur where he scored his first goal of the season - also his first league goal since April 2019 - as the Blues lodged a much-needed victory at Stamford Bridge.

Even against Bayern Munich, Giroud was phenomenal. In a match where he was the only outlet for Chelsea, he did just what the manager would've wanted him to do. He won duels, held off the defenders, freed his wingers and created the best of the opportunities.

One can say that Abraham has more pace than Giroud, is direct and he has more tricks up his sleeve but given his experience and proven goal-scoring ability, it often feels strange that Giroud does not get enough games. After his performance in the last three fixtures, Lampard should put some faith in him. He surely is one of the most underrated strikers in the Premier League.
