Former Bangalore captain Virat Kolhi continued his poor run of form in the Indian T20 League 2022 as he was dismissed for a golden duck against Team Lucknow at the DY Patil Stadium on Tuesday.

After Bangalore opener Anuj Rawat returned to the pavilion in the very first over of the match, Kolhli soon followed as he was dismissed on the very first ball that he faced against Lucknow pacer Dushmantha Chameera. The former India captain tried to guide the ball through off-side but ended up giving an easy catch to Deepak Hooda at the backward point on the final ball of the first over.

Interestingly, this was the fourth time Kohli was dismissed for a golden duck in the Indian T20 League. The last time he was out for a golden duck in the Indian T20 League was against former Kolkata fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile in 2017.

What is a golden duck in cricket?

The term ‘duck?in cricket refers to a batter getting dismissed without scoring a single run in their innings. A golden duck, in extension, is when a batter gets dismissed on the first ball of his/her innings without troubling the scorers.

What are the types of ducks in cricket?

There are generally eight different types of ducks in cricket. These are golden duck, silver duck, bronze duck, diamond duck, royal duck, laughing duck, pair and king pair. All types of ducks require the batter to get out without scoring a single run.

Golden Duck: When a batter gets dismissed on the first legal delivery that they face, it is known as a golden duck.

Silver Duck: When a batter gets dismissed on the second delivery of their innings, it is termed a silver duck.

Bronze Duck: When a batter is dismissed on the third delivery of their innings, it is known as a bronze duck.

Diamond Duck: When a batter gets dismissed without facing any legal delivery, it is termed a diamond duck. Diamond Duck is especially applicable in the case of run-outs and time-outs (if an incoming batter is not ready to play within three minutes of the dismissal of the previous batter they are considered dismissed via time-out).

Royal Duck: When an opener gets dismissed on the very first ball of their team’s innings, it is known as a royal duck.

Laughing Duck: When a batter gets out at the end of their team’s innings, it is termed a laughing duck.

Pair: When a batter gets dismissed for zero in both the innings of a Test match or a first-class game, it is referred to as a pair.

King Pair: When a batter gets dismissed on the very first ball that they face in both the innings of a Test without scoring any run, it is called a king pair.

Who has the most golden ducks in cricket?

Former Sri Lanka cricketers Muttiah Muralitharan and Lasith Malinga have the most golden ducks in Test and One-Day Internationals (ODIs) respectively.

While Muralitharan has recorded 14 golden ducks in Test cricket, Malinga accumulated 13 golden ducks in ODIs.

Pakistan batter Umar Akmal has registered the most golden ducks in T20 internationals. Umar Akmal has been dismissed for a golden duck six times in the cricket’s shortest format.

Meanwhile, AB de Villiers, Suresh Raina, Gautam Gambhir and Parthiv Patel have recorded the most golden ducks in the Indian T20 League. All the four batters have been dismissed for a golden duck on four occasions each.

Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal's three-year ban from cricket for failing to report a match-fixing approach was on Wednesday reduced to 18 months on appeal, meaning he can resume playing in August next year.

Former Pakistan supreme court judge and independent adjudicator Faqir Mohammad Khokhar announced the appeal result, which had been reserved two weeks ago, after a short hearing in Lahore attended by Akmal and his lawyer.

Akmal pleaded guilty in April to a charge of failing to report two match-fixing approaches and received a three-year ban for each offence, to run concurrently from February 20.

The anti-corruption code of Pakistan Cricket Board states that players must report all the corrupt approaches to the authorities.

Despite the reduction, Akmal complained he had been unfairly treated.

"I am still not satisfied because other players got less punishment on the same charge," Umar told media, referring to a one-year ban (six months suspended) handed to fast bowler Mohammad Irfan in 2017.

Irfan had not contested the charge of failing to report and was given an "agreed sanction".

"I will consult my lawyers and then try to get it reduced further," Akmal said.

Following a brilliant Test debut in 2009 when he scored a century in New Zealand, the talented Akmal was touted as a future great but his career has been punctuated by controversy before this year's ban.

Akmal was arrested in 2014 after a scuffle with a traffic warden in Lahore.

And he was banned for three matches and fined over a spat with Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur in 2017.

If ever a soap opera were to be made about Pakistan cricket, Umar Akmal might be a good candidate for the role of enfant terrible.

The talented-yet-wayward batsman is scrambling to save his once-promising career, after he was hit with a three-year ban for failing to report match-fixing offers.

Umar is expected to learn the fate of an appeal to last month's disciplinary action on or about May 26, which also happens to be his 30th birthday.

Right now, the signs don't look good. Umar declined to speak to AFP for this story, but several experts suggested Pakistan's close-knit cricketing world is fed up.

"Umar is not prepared to show remorse and seek apology," the judgement accompanying Umar's ban states.

Ramiz Raja, a former Pakistan captain and a well-known cricket analyst, said he was "pained to see such a talent go waste".

"Cricket cannot condone such behaviour and fans need to realise that rooting for tainted players is actually harming Pakistan cricket and its image," Raja told AFP.

Umar's Test career exploded into life with a century in his 2009 debut in New Zealand, a feat that prompted commentators to describe him a "future star".

But his expanding profile was soon tempered with disciplinary problems. His two brothers ? Kamran and Adnan -?also played for Pakistan but never got into hot water.

Within months of his first international outing, Umar reportedly feigned an injury in a bid to skip a Test in Australia, in protest over Kamran being dropped.

He was fined and placed on a six-month probation. Even the astute Misbah-ul-Haq -- Pakistan's most successful Test captain -- could not rein in Umar.

Following an irresponsible shot in a 2011 Test in Zimbabwe, he never again selected Umar for the longer format. The following year, he was fined and reprimanded for an altercation with umpires during the Twenty20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.

He ran into trouble off the field too. In 2014, he was arrested in his native Lahore over a scuffle with a traffic warden. He has repeatedly grabbed headlines for partying late into the night, ending in yet more fines and reprimands.

- 'Only himself to blame' -

A dozen captains and coaches tried to keep Umar on track, but without luck.

Waqar Younis had two coaching stints from 2010 to 2016, and ended up recommending an undisciplined "Umar be kept away from the national team for some time".

After Waqar, coach Mickey Arthur, of South Africa, had several run-ins with Umar.

In 2017 Arthur sent him home days before the start of the Champions Trophy after he failed a fitness test.

Later that year he received a three-month ban after a spat with Arthur in the national cricket academy in Lahore.

Arthur, now head coach of Sri Lanka, said he wasn't surprised by Umar's recent problems.

"I feel nothing for guys who waste their talent like he has... he should be the disappointed one!" Arthur told AFP in a WhatsApp message.

"He will only have himself to blame and should have taken responsibility for his career instead of always looking to make excuses and blame others."

Despite promises, Umar did not change.

"I want to ask forgiveness of all fans who have been hurt by my conduct," Umar said in 2017. I am ready to commit to cricket. I still have a lot of cricket left in me and I aim to make another international comeback."

But it seems he has now run out of chances.

In a recently released list of 23 probables, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to leave the likes of Wahab Riaz, Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad for the final fitness test ahead of the World Cup.

After a consultation with head coach Mickey Arthur, the selection committee, led by former player Inzamam ul Haq, has invited 23 players for a two-day fitness test ?scheduled for April 15th and 16th ?after which the final squad will be announced on April 18th.

Akmal, who recently scored an unbeaten 136 during Balochistan’s six-wicket win over Punjab in the ongoing Pakistan Cup, was recalled for the ODI series against Australia last month after more than a two-and-half-year axe. He, however, came in the limelight for the wrongdoings after he was fined 20 per cent of his match fee for partying beyond midnight before the fifth ODI.

Wahab Riaz, on the other hand, took five wickets in the Pakistan Cup on Wednesday, but along with Ahmed Shehzad, he has been left out for the probables.

There have been several surprising inclusions with most of the players, who debuted against Australia, have been called. The list includes Mohammad Abbas, Shan Masood and Mohammad Hasnain. Also in the list are Mohammad Amir and Yasir Shah, who haven’t been prolific of late.

Amir, since the 2017 Champions Trophy, has failed to deliver impressive numbers, while Yasir flunked his audition as well. Part of Pakistan’s ODI squad against Australia, the spinner managed mere four wickets in five games at an average of 70.75.

Pakistan will leave for England on April 23 and will play their tournament opener against Windies on May 31.

23-man list: Sarfaraz Ahmed, Abid Ali, Asif Ali, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail, Hassan Ali, Imad Wasim, Imam-ul-Haq, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, Shoaib Malik, Usman Shinwari, Yasir Shah
